In spiritual circles, it's common to hear the human body referred to as a "meat suit." While the phrase is admittedly funny, it points to a deeper issue that can arise on the spiritual path: the tendency to disconnect from our physical experience in pursuit of transcendence.
In episode 596 of Soul Elevation, I explore why our bodies deserve far more respect than they often receive when we are focused on spirituality and why honoring the human experience is a vital part of spiritual growth. Rather than viewing the body as a limitation, we can recognize and respect it as an extraordinary instrument of consciousness, healing, and divine intelligence.
The fact is that many people begin their spiritual journey after spending years focused primarily on the physical world. Our modern culture often over emphasizes appearance, comfort, achievement, and material success. The body becomes central to our identity, and much of our energy is spent trying to improve, protect, or perfect it.
As we step onto a spiritual awakening path, the pendulum can sometimes swing too far in the opposite direction. Instead of identifying completely with the body, we may begin to reject it. We may see the body as an obstacle, a burden, or something we must overcome to reach higher states of consciousness. But true spiritual growth is about integrating spirit and physicality in a balanced and harmonious way, rather than rejecting the body.
Why Your Soul Chose a Human Experience
Before incarnating, your soul had countless possibilities. Yet it chose this particular experience of having a physical body on this Earthly plane. It actually wanted the opportunities that come with living in a world of duality.
It can be easy to question that soul choice once you are here in this challenging environment! So why did your soul choose this? Because the human experience offers unique opportunities for growth that cannot be fully replicated in non-physical realms. Experiences such as forgiveness, compassion, resilience, trust, and unconditional love can emerge through challenge, contrast, and apparent separation.
The temporary forgetting of our divine nature creates the conditions for profound soul evolution. Your body and physicality are no mistake. Physicality and all its ups and downs is an essential part of your sacred journey.
Throughout history, spiritual traditions have suggested that humans possess extraordinary abilities that remain largely dormant, like telepathy, intuition, energy healing, or clairvoyance. Many people have experienced glimpses of these capacities without recognizing them for what they are, like thinking about someone moments before they call, receiving intuitive information that later proves accurate, or feeling a strong energetic connection with another person. These experiences hint at the vast potential already embedded within the human design.
The Body's Remarkable Healing Intelligence
One of the most overlooked aspects of the human body is its natural ability to heal, and we have proof of this hidden right in plain sight: the placebo effect.
In medical research, participants who receive a placebo often experience measurable improvements in their condition despite receiving no active medication. It's not just that they think they got better - they got measurably better, objectively.
And yet we dismiss the placebo effect! We use it in a derogatory way to explain why someone got better, rather than noticing something very important: The placebo effect is showing us the body's innate ability to heal! It demonstrates that belief, expectation, hope, and consciousness can influence physical outcomes.
When the mind receives the message that healing is possible, the body often responds. What profound proof of intelligence of the body itself! The body possesses mechanisms for restoration that modern science is still working to fully understand.
Take a moment to consider everything your body is doing right now. Your heart is beating. Your lungs are breathing. Cells are regenerating. Nerves are transmitting information. Your brain is processing countless streams of sensory data.
All of this occurs without conscious effort.
Most of us rarely stop to appreciate the extraordinary complexity operating within us every second of every day. The fact that we can hear sound, process language, experience emotions, store memories, and interact with the world through a biological system of incredible sophistication is nothing short of miraculous. Yet because it happens all day every day, we often take it for granted.
The body is not merely a container for consciousness or your soul. It also stores your experience. Emotions, memories, traumas, and even spiritual insights can be stored within the body.
Many healing modalities recognize that movement, touch, breathwork, bodywork, and somatic practices can unlock information that may not be accessible through the mind alone. Healing often comes through feeling rather than thinking. When we begin listening to the wisdom of the body, we gain access to deeper layers of awareness and transformation.
Spiritual Awakening Through Embodiment
Spirituality is often associated with transcending the physical world. But this is actually a very limited experience of spirituality, and perhaps one of the greatest spiritual lessons is learning to fully inhabit this physical world as the spiritual being you are, in a human body. Every sensation, challenge, emotion, and experience offers an opportunity for growth, awareness, and deeper connection to Source.
Rather than seeking to escape the body, we can learn to collaborate with it, honoring its wisdom and listening to its messages.
And we can recognize the profound intelligence that has been present within us all along.
